How Does the Car Trade-In Tax Credit Work?

When you trade in an existing vehicle at a licensed car dealership towards the purchase of another vehicle, 44 out of 50 US states treat your trade-in allowance as a direct reduction in the taxable sales price.

For example, if you purchase a new SUV for $40,000 and the dealership gives you $15,000 for your old vehicle:

  • In a trade-in credit state (e.g., Texas or Florida at 7% total tax): You pay tax on only $25,000 ($1,750 tax). You save $1,050 in cash taxes!
  • In a non-credit state (e.g., California or Virginia): You pay tax on the full $40,000 ($2,800 tax). Your trade-in provides zero sales tax relief.
State Category States Tax Credit Rule
Full Credit States (44 States) TX, FL, AZ, WA, NY, PA, OH, GA, NC, CO, NV, IL, etc. Tax only the difference (Purchase Price minus Trade-In Value).
No Credit States (3 States + DC) California (CA), District of Columbia (DC), Hawaii (HI) Tax is assessed on the full unadjusted gross purchase price.
Modified / Capped States Michigan (MI), Virginia (VA), Maryland (MD) MI caps credit at $10,000 (2026 inflation-adjusted); VA taxes gross price at flat 4.15%.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't California allow trade-in sales tax credit? ▼

Under California Revenue and Taxation Code Section 6012, gross receipts subject to sales tax include the full sales price without any deduction for property taken in trade. Therefore, California car buyers must pay sales tax on the entire retail price of the new vehicle.

Can I get a sales tax credit if I sell privately and buy from a dealer later? ▼

In almost all states, no. The trade-in must be an in-kind transaction executed on the exact same purchase contract with the licensed selling dealer. Private sales do not qualify for dealer trade-in tax credits (with rare exceptions in states like Missouri that allow tax vouchers within 180 days).

What happens if I owe money on my trade-in loan? ▼

Sales tax credit is calculated on the gross trade-in allowance agreed upon by the dealer, regardless of how much you owe your current bank. For example, if your car is worth $15,000 but you owe $10,000, your sales tax credit is still based on the full $15,000.
